London street markets are no surprise since they have been around from the middle ages. They just keep getting better! People come to London to do their shopping at the Portobello Market, the trendy Brick Lane Market on the east end, and the Hanbury Street covered market. In Notting Hill, the Portobello Market is known all over the world. It includes the famous antique market, fruit and vegetable market and a second hand flee market.
London street markets can be open-air or indoor markets, each with its own distinctive mix of products. You can find antiques, food markets and flower stalls, delicious food items and a never-ending supply of clothes designs and one of a kind gifts. Most venders will want you to pay in cash but don't keep it all in one place and only bring enough to spend for the day just in case. Hold on to your purse while you shop and keep it closed. You will see some people sitting and begging for money, they are there every day and some take advantage of the shoppers. Leave the passport someplace safe that day.
The London street markets are integral part of your cultural travel adventure and are definitely worth visiting. Camden High Street is the home to Camden markets. Here you will see over 100,000 visitors every weekend! This is the place to find unique clothing items and gifts. It is a destination for both the tourist and Londoners. Although Sunday is the most crowded, it is open on the weekdays also.
This spot actually includes smaller markets including The Electric Ballroom with film and music happenings on Saturdays and indoor funky market on Sundays. The Inverness Street market offers fruit, vegetables, clothes and souvenirs. Buck Street Market, sometimes called the Cages, is the first one as you leave Camden Town tube station. Be careful with this one as everything is packed so close together, it would be easy to grab hold of your bag and run off.
The Camden Canal market is a smaller market, open Friday through Sunday. Camden Lock markets is considered the original one. It offers unique gifts, jewelry, and clothing. The Camden Stables market is the largest with over 450 shops and food stalls. It's open every day from 10 to 6 pm. This one is highly recommended. You probably won't have enough time to visit all of the London street markets in one trip to England, but you can try, and, there's always next year!
